Crestwood board eyes Aug. 3 mayoral election

A resolution setting an election for Tuesday, Aug. 3, to fill the remainder of former Mayor Jim Robertson’s term was scheduled to be considered earlier this week by the Crestwood Board of Aldermen.

The Board of Aldermen was scheduled to meet Tuesday night — after the Call went to press.

Robertson announced his resignation near the end of the Jan. 27 Board of Aldermen meeting. An attorney who was elected mayor in April 2002, Robertson said he was resigning to focus on family, medical and personal matters that for some time he has been unable to give the attention they deserve.

Given how the responsibilities of his mayoral post essentially had become a second full-time job, Robertson “reluctantly” concluded he could not focus on those family, medical and personal matters and give his mayoral duties the attention they deserved.

If the Board of Aldermen approves the resolution establishing an Aug. 3 mayoral election, filing for the post would open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, and continue through 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 18.

Whoever is elected in August will serve until April 2005, when Robertson’s mayoral term would have concluded. An election for mayor also will take place in April 2005 and whoever is elected will serve a three-year term.

The president of the Board of Aldermen — Richard Breeding of Ward 1 — currently is serving as acting mayor. As acting mayor, Breeding will continue to have a vote in board deliberations, but will not have the veto power of the mayor, according to the City Charter.

He will serve as acting mayor at least until the Board of Aldermen reorganizes after the April 6 election. At that time, aldermen could re-elect Breeding board president or elect another alderman board president. Whoever is elected board president will serve as acting mayor until the Aug. 3 election.
