County Health Department urges caution during extreme heat advisory

The St. Louis County Department of Health is cautioning residents that outdoor plans for the start of the holiday weekend will likely be affected by a heat advisory in effect now until 7 p.m. Saturday.

The heat index during this period is expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees each afternoon and early evening.

Officials strongly are urging caution and common sense during this and all periods of extreme heat, according to a news release. So far this year, the Health Department has reported five heat-related deaths along with 337 people admitted or treated and released for heat exhaustion.

“We experience heat waves almost every summer and it’s important to take the usual precautions whenever this happens,” Dolores Gunn, director of the Health Department, stated in the release.
