Cougars get victory over Jennings

In a game in which the Affton Cougars needed a huge win to help them prepare for the state playoffs, they got it.

Despite falling behind 6-0 early when an interception was returned for a touchdown, Affton cruised to a 15-6 first quarter lead and knocked off Jennings, 48-6.

Affton, now 4-3, was led by running back Kornell Simmons’ 175 yards.

Simmons also scored two touchdowns in the win, as Affton had eight players combine for 277 yards rushing on the day.

In its last five games, Jennings has not scored one point while on offense.

Affton Coach Dan Oliver was happy to see the Cougars’ offense continue to shake off some early season rust.

“Kornell is really kind of hitting his stride now,” he said. “And we took a chance earlier in the year on Sherman (Golden), and that has worked out.”

Golden, a freshman, also had a good day against Jennings (1-6), running for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Oliver hopes that Affton continues to improve as district play gets going next week against 7-0 Clayton.

“We’ve kind of looked at them for several weeks knowing this game could decide the district championship,” Oliver told the Call. “We will need a good week of practice to prepare for them, but we’re in a pretty good spot right now as a team.”

Last weekend, Clayton dispatched the previously unbeaten Ladue team, 38-7, improving its record to 7-0. Ladue dropped to 6-1.

Competing in a district that includes Affton, Clayton, St. Mary’s and DuBourg, there is little doubt that neither Clayton nor Affton wants to lose this game and have to rely on help.

Clayton and Affton will kick off district play at 1 p.m Saturday at Affton High School, 8309 Mackenzie Road.
