Commends Campisi on ‘yes’ vote for substitute bill to roll back tax rate

I am writing to commend County Councilman John Campisi for his “yes” vote in regard to Substitute Bill No. 1 for Bill No. 274.

The substitute bill would have rolled back the county property tax rate. It did not pass.

County Executive Charlie Dooley said the county receives no windfall from reassessment. A county official estimated the windfall to be $16 million. To the hard-working folks of south county, $16 million is a lot of money.

My question to Dooley is: “How stupid do you think we are?”

You jack up everybody’s assessment by about 20 percent to 40 percent. You insist on keeping the county rate at 55.8 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. We have to pay more of our hard-earned money to the county on our real and personal property tax bills. I call that a tax increase. My thanks to John Campisi for standing up for south-county taxpayers.
