Cheaper for sewer district to ‘pay as you go’

To the editor:

Most of us received a postcard from an organization called “Good Jobs and Clean Water” indicating massive monthly sewer bill increases to either $37 or $24 per month.

First of all, if we didn’t use our kitchen sinks as sewers, through the use of garbage disposals, these massive increases would probably not be necessary. Is it worth $20 per month to avoid taking the garbage out to the trash can?

Secondly, the alternative to the higher rate, according to the postcard, is to vote for a half billion dollars in sewer bonds to spread the cost. No mention is made of the interest rate or for how long it will take to pay these bonds off and what the total interest costs will be.

It would seem to me that giving a half billion dollars to MSD to spend is like letting a blind dog loose in the meat department. It would be better to have the closer scrutiny that billing and payment upon completion brings. Pay as you go is much cheaper in the long run. Doubling the cost through interest payments is not a good answer.
