Bradley honor presented

Megan Toal, a re-cent high school graduate from St. Louis, has been named a Presidential Scholar at Bradley University.

She graduated last week from Mehlville Senior High School.

Toal is the daughter of Jim and Karla Toal.

Scholarship selection is based upon grade point average, high school class rank, ACT or SAT scores, leadership and community service. Bradley’s Presidential Scholars represent the top 5 percent of all college-bound students in the nation.

Student works in research

Mark Schwarz of south county recently completed three years of working at Louisiana State Uni-versity Eye Research Center while an undergraduate at Tulane University in New Orleans.

The goal of this research is to save people from the loss of sight due to damage caused by glaucoma.

He worked as a programmer as well as the designer and builder of the electrical components that control the confocal microscope that was used in the research study.

Schwarz recently graduated from Tulane University Summa Cum Laude, earning a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering with department honors.

While at Tulane on a Dean’s Honor Scholarship, he served as president of both Tulane chapters of the Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society and IEEE — the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

He also served as treasurer of the Tulane Chapter of the Eta Kappa Nu National Honor Society for Electrical Engineers. Schwarz is listed in the 2003 Who’s Who Among Students in Amer-ican Universities and Colleges.

Consequent to the research, he received recognition as a co-author in the publication of three technical research papers which were presented at and published by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology at its 2002 and 2003 conventions.

Last summer, Schwarz worked for the hardware/software development group of Deutsche Telekom in Bonn, Ger-many, where he assisted in overseeing the integration and timing of system upgrade projects.

Next fall, Schwarz plans to pursue graduate studies in electrical engineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

He is the son of Ron and Carolyn Schwarz of south county.

Inducted into Mortar Board

Sarah Burris of St. Louis recently was recognized for induction into Mortar Board at the annual Honors Convoca-tion at Stephens College.

Mortar Board is a national honor society for seniors who have demonstrated outstanding service and leadership while maintaining a high grade-point average.

Burris, a graduate of Oakville Senior High, is the daughter of Shelley Burris of St. Louis, and Steven Burris of High Ridge.

Receives Maryville honor

Mary Schroeder, daughter of Mark and Margaret Schroe-der of St. Louis, has earned an M-PACT scholarship from Maryville University for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Maryville established the M-PACT scholarships to award to students chosen specifically for their potential to make significant contributions to the vibrant student life atmosphere on Maryville’s campus.

She graduated last week from Oak-ville Senior High School. At Oakville, Schroeder received the International Foreign Language Award and held executive positions in her class as a sophomore, junior and senior. She was named to the high honor roll and was in-cluded in Who’s Who Among American High School Students.

Earns choral scholarship

Southwest Missouri State University has announced that Joel Thornton, who graduated last week from Mehlville Senior High School, has received a choral scholarship award in the Department of Music at SMSU for the fall semester.

This award was achieved through competitive auditions at SMSU and is in recognition of Thornton’s achievements in his high school choral program under the direction of Angela Hendrick.

The monetary award is to be used toward tuition fees and also includes a fee waiver for applied voice lesson fees.

By accepting this award, permission to perform in one of SMSU’s select choral ensembles is assured: the SMSU Collegiate Singers, the SMSU Chamber Singers, or the SMSU Concert Chorale.

SMSU choirs have performed in tours throughout the United States and Europe.

In May 2004, the Chorale will travel to New York City, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

The choral program is housed in the rehearsal and performance facilities in the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts on campus.
