The Grantwood Village Board of Trustees last week approved an ordinance amending the village code to eliminate references to a police commissioner.

The board voted 4-0 on Jan. 18 to approve the ordinance. Community Relations Director Mike Jones was absent.

Following the resignation of three of its trustees last spring, including Police Commissioner Glenn Biffignani, the board decided to eliminate the police commissioner office and replace it with a community relations director.

Village Attorney Emily Kelly determined the ordinance in the village’s code that outlined the police commissioner’s duties conflicted with state law, which requires the individual in that position to have a certain level of police training to oversee police business.

Trustees voted last July to eliminate the position and to appoint Jones to the board as community relations director.
