To the editor:
Only 36% of people in the U.S. know even one of the key signs of a stroke. Remember the acronym BE FAST: balance, eyes, face, arms, speech and time.
My husband experienced balance problems and went to the doctor, where an MRI was ordered. Before the scheduled test, his symptoms worsened. On April 25, when I asked him a question, he mumbled in response — I immediately called 911, and an ambulance and pumper from Mehlville Fire Protection District House 3 arrived very quickly. He was taken to Mercy South, which has one of the best stroke teams in the area. After receiving excellent care, he was transferred to Mercy South Rehabilitation, another highly rated facility. He received intensive therapy and was fast tracked to go home where he is doing well.
Thanks to everyone for their professionalism, compassion, competence and dedication.
