Back-to-back wins over Mehlville, Fox bolster Oakville girls’ basketball team

After suffering a three-game losing streak at the start of the year, the Oakville Senior High School girls’ basketball team bounced back with two wins last week.

Oakville defeated Mehlville 70-33 Jan. 17 and Fox 75-23 Friday.

“I think we’ve been playing well the last four games,” Oakville head coach Ron Thompson said. “I think that our young guards are getting more confident and our turnovers are down.”

In the Fox win, Oakville (7-6, 2-2 Suburban West) was led by Kelly Gallagher’s 15-point scoring effort. The junior forward also recorded four rebounds and one steal.

“Kelly just got herself back to game shape from a severe ankle sprain at the beginning of the season,” Thompson said. “She’s really starting to play a lot better.”

Oakville’s Andrea Boone also scored in double figures with 12 points and two rebounds. The junior guard also nailed down two steals and two assists.

“Going into the season, we put a lot of responsibility on her shoulders,” Thomp-son said. “But since (Leslie) DeGonia took over more of the ball-handling duties, I think that there’s not as much pressure on Andrea and it frees her up more to score.”

Oakville senior forward Nikki Norberg also scored 12 points with six rebounds. Norberg also had five steals and one assist.

“Nikki played not her greatest game, but she played well,” Thompson said. “I think that in the last four or five games, she’s not had to carry us on her shoulders because we’re getting some of the other girls to chip in.”

Also scoring in double figures for Oakville was junior guard Rachel Walther, who had 10 points and one rebound.

“Rachel’s another player that we’re always trying to get to understand how to take a better shot,” Thompson said. “I think that her shot selection really helped her in the Fox game.”

The Tigers are back in action at 7 p.m. Monday when they play host to Ursuline.

Ursuline (9-5) dropped a 69-40 decision at home to McCluer North Friday night.
