Assisted-living facility for individuals with Alzheimer’s approved by council

Avalon Memory Care, an assisted-living facility for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, received unanimous approval from the County Council last week for a conditional use permit and rezoning request.

The facility, to be constructed at the northwest side of Tesson Ferry Road and the southeast side of Butler Hill Road, will consist of two, one-story, 10,000-square-foot buildings to be built on the 2.9-acre site. Each building is expected to house up to 22 patients with 16 units.

Avalon Memory Care representatives, according to information provided to the council, said the objective of the facility is to “create a homelike environment, unlike the institutional setting usually provided, for Alzheimer patients who are in the mid- to late-stages of the disease.”

The county Planning Commission stated in its information report the “proposed use of a group home for the elderly is a low-intensity, low traffic-generating use that is designed to accommodate senior citizens with special needs, and provide services and housing options for them.”

At the Planning Commission meeting June 4, three individuals in attendance were in favor of the facility; none were opposed.

The Planning Commission recommended approval.
