Appalled at remarks about new grading scale

To the editor:

As a current student at Truman State University and an alumna of Mehlville Senior High School, I am appalled by the comments regarding the lowering of the grading scale made by Mr. Lahm and Ms. Rauh in the May 29 issue of the Call.

The lowering of the grading scale will mean more educationally competitive students graduating from the Mehlville School District, quite the contrary of what Mr. Lahm feels will “dumb down” students.

The lowering of the grading scale will only, as the committee proposed it would, allow Mehlville School District students to stay competitive with peers throughout Missouri and allow them greater chances of receiving admission into the universities of their choice.

As a 2002 graduate, I know the frustrations high-school students go through trying to attain an excellent grade-point average and ACT score to gain admission into a university.

By lowering the grading scale, the Mehl-ville School District is not allowing students to “learn less,” as Ms. Rauh feels.

Instead, the district is offering the advantages of equal grades that are ubiquitous throughout the state.
