Anyone stumped for an extra something for a June graduate or for Dad on Fathers Day

Anyone stumped for an extra something for a June graduate or for Dad on Fathers Day can always give them the gift of peace and quiet at home by placing their telephone numbers on Missouri’s No Call list, according to Attorney General Jay Nixon.

“Registering your home phone number is quick, simple and free,” Nixon stated in a news release. “If you’re tired of having dinner interrupted by telemarketers, the No Call list can give you the quiet time you want.”

More than 972,000 home telephone numbers in Missouri currently are on the list, and Nixon said he expected that number to cross the one million threshold very soon.

“Of course, we don’t know right now from what part of Missouri that one millionth number will come from, but reaching that milestone will be further proof that this program is enormously popular,” Nixon said. “When you look at the average size household each phone number represents, that’s almost half the state’s population protected by the No Call program.”

To register, Missourians can go to the Attorney General’s Web site at

to sign up online, or call toll-free 1-866-NO CAll 1 (1-866-662-2551). Either method takes only a few minutes.

Nixon said his office already had collected $580,000 from almost 70 telemarketers across the country who had violated the law. The law took effect July 1, 2001.

“We will continue to be aggressive in going after No Call violators,” Nixon said. “It doesn’t matter whether they’re located in Missouri or not, as demonstrated by the location of the telemarketers we’ve already gone after. Our efforts have been aided greatly by the consumers on the No Call team who are calling to report violations. Without them, this wouldn’t work.”

Consumers who are on the No Call list already can file complaints with Nixon’s office by calling that same toll-free number or by visiting that same Web site.
