Friday evening was a frustrating night for the Lindbergh High School girls’ soccer team.

The Flyers’ (5-4-1, 1-1 Suburban West) frustration stemmed from a 1-1 tie to Parkway North in which Lindbergh found itself down 1-0 in the first half of play.

“It was a bit of a frustrating game,” Lindbergh head coach Mark Giesing told the Call. “We cam back in the second half and continued to play hard.”

Lindbergh senior midfielder Allie Libby prevented the Flyers’ loss on a direct-kick goal, which was her third goal of the 2004 season.

“Allie’s goal was about 30 to 35 yards out and we spend a lot of time in direct kick situations,” Giesing said. “It’s really paid off for us.”

The following afternoon was a different affair for the Flyers as they handed conference rival Marquette a 2-1 defeat. The win was what the doctor ordered so that Lindbergh didn’t find itself down 0-2 in the Suburban West standings.

“Marquette’s got a really good team this year,” Giesing said. “It was a warm day and I think that fatigue was a factor for both team.”

But the Flyers head coach believes that one of the keys to the game was the depth of his bench as he rotated players in and out of the game.

“The key for us was that we used our bench extensively,” Giesing explained. “We really don’t have a marquee player, but we have many hard working girls on the field.”

Libby notched her forth goal of the season for the Flyers, while freshman forward Nancy LaRose recorded her first goal as a member of the varsity squad.

“Nancy’s goal was a real hustle goal,” Giesing said. “It actually was the first goal of her varsity career.”

The Flyers are back in conference action tonight — April 22 — as they play host to the Fox Warriors.

“It’s a critical game for us,” Giesing said. “It seems like everyone in the conference is with one loss and it’s up for grabs. It’s going to be a big week for our program.”

Lindbergh’s meeting with the Warriors is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
