Affton High to present ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

The Affton High School Theater Department will present “Singin’ in the Rain” at 8:15 p.m. Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28, on the high school stage, 8309 Mackenzie Road.

“Singin’ in the Rain,” by Betty Comden and Adolph Greene, is one of the most famous Broadway musicals of all time.

“This play is a wonderful experience for the students because the music and staging is very traditional, but fun,” Judy Rethwisch, drama teacher and director, stated in a news release. “The captivating theme and unforgettable music has become widely acclaimed. Nobody should miss an experience like this.”

The musical traces the life of Don Lockwood, played by Sean Binkley, as he transforms from a humble silent-screen actor to the star of a talkie movie.

His life is complicated by Lina Lamont, played by Brenna McDermott, an admirer, co-star and exploiter.

The leads, choreographers, crews and directors provide a strong foundation for the success of the musical with Grace Pelsue playing Kathy Selden, Joan Schiller playing Dora Bailey and Larry Hardney playing Cosmo Brown.

Assisting Rethwisch are student directors Nicole Madlinger, Alexa Quinlan and Abigail Schaefer with Carl Stafford as producer. Barb Menos is choreographer.

Behind the scenes are Michael Ackermann and Kevin Roe, technical directors; Electa Saxe, music director; Tim Hausman, pit director; Sarah LeBlanc, publicity; Louis Gereaux, sound; Nathan Shepard, lighting; Tony Gallegos, sets; Michael Lumpkins, props; Kathy King, scenes; and Alex Wolf, costumes and makeup.

Reserved tickets are on sale now at the high school office. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students and also are available at the door. For more information, call (314) 633-0012.
