Affton High School will get its graduation on Facebook Live this year, in three separate parts.
Graduates from the Class of 2020 will celebrate in three separate ceremonies broadcast on Facebook Live on three separate nights. The graduation will have limited seating due to COVID-19 social distancing, so it will be livestreamed so that everyone can see it. The graduation will also be split into three parts so that not all students are together at once.
The livestreamed graduation replaces the in-person ceremony that had been previously scheduled at Powell Hall for July 31.
Other South County schools have come up with alternate plans. Lindbergh High School will hold a drive-in graduation ceremony Friday, June 26, at the PowerPlex complex in Hazelwood. Mehlville and Oakville high schools will get an in-person graduation July 19 at Family Arena in St. Charles.
The first Affton graduation will start at 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, for students whose names begin with A through E.
The second graduation will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, for students with names F through Mihigo.
The third graduation will be celebrated for students with last names Missler through Y at 7 p.m. Friday, June 19.
Finally, a celebratory Class of 2020 Parade will take off at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, June 20.
The route will start at Mesnier Primary School, 6930 Weber, Road, then follow Valcour Avenue to Heege Road to Mackenzie Road and end at Affton High School. 8309 Mackenzie Road.
With the last two months of school moved to online-only due to COVID-19 and graduation ceremonies changed in a myriad of ways, the district has looked for other ways to honor the Class of 2020.
The football field lights have been turned on for 20 minutes, 20 seconds at 8:20 p.m. Friday nights. Students’ photos and names have appeared on the marquee outside Affton High School.
Principal Deann Myers and other school officials delivered yard signs honoring each graduate to their houses in April.
The Call honored the Class of 2020 in its online Grad Salute for this year’s graduates.
