One week into the season, the Affton High School Cougars football team had some doubts about exactly where their stood.

Having been heavily favored to roll over Principia, the Cougars narrowly escaped with an 8-7 win.

Now, just one week later, perhaps some of that doubt is gone.

Led by Kornell Simmons’ 204 yards rushing and three touchdowns, the Cougars improved their season record to 2-0 with a 48-0 dismantling of Pacific, which fell to 0-2.

Simmons led an attack that saw eight players combine to accumulate 311 yards on the ground, while quarterback Corey Meyer threw two touchdown passes and D.J. Ford ran for and caught a touchdown.

Ford ran for 33 yards in the game to go with his 23-yard touchdown reception.

Calmez Atkins also ran for a touchdown and had two interceptions in the win, helping the Cougars to a 20-0 halftime lead that swelled to its final 48-0 margin by the end of the third quarter. Affton did not score at all in the fourth quarter with such a commanding lead.

Affton Coach Dan Oliver admitted that after the Principia game in week one that a little doubt had seeped in his thoughts.

“I was a little concerned because we did not start the season like I thought we would,” he said. “But we had a good week of practice, and things were a little more in sync for us last Friday night.”

Now the Cougars will get set to take on the Troy Trojans, who are 0-2 on the season but are a very formidable opponent.

“They’ve played tough,” noted Oliver. “They are hanging in there in those losses, and hopefully we can adjust to whatever they run against us.”

In the Trojans’ two losses, they have been outscored by a total of nine points against two quality opponents — a 6-0 loss to Washington in week one followed by a 16-13 overtime loss to Howell last weekend.

Affton and Troy will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Affton High School, 8309 Mackenzie Road.
