With a five-game winning streak in its back pocket, the boys’ basketball team at Lindbergh High School is going to take advantage of its No. 2 seed in this week’s District No. 8 Tournament at Vianney High School.

“For us, it’s one of those things that’s pretty good because we’ve had a few people sick,” Flyers head coach Ken Libby told the Call. “The winner of the Mehlville and Oakville game will be a formidable opponent.”

The Flyers (12-11, 3-4 Suburban West) ended their regular season with a 90-64 thrashing of Fox last Friday. The game not only was a way to send Lindbergh’s senior class off on a strong note — it was continuation of the green and gold’s recent solid play.

“I think it was a game of momentum,” Libby said. “It was senior night and we had five seniors starting, which was great for them.”

Leading the Flyers’ offense was the solid play of junior guard Richard Williams who racked up a 30-point, seven-assist, two-rebound and one-steal effort against the Warriors. Williams scored 12 of his 30 points from three-point range.

“It was a really good night for Richard,” Libby said. “He responded well once we got him in the game. He was definitely a recipient of the up-tempo game.”

Another Flyer who had a solid evening was senior guard Mike Mohrman with 14 points, five assists, three steals, one rebound and one blocked shot.

“Mike had some nice open shots that he hit and was also a recipient of the up-tempo game,” Libby said. “He had a really good game and did well for us.”

Senior forward Chris Geisz finished out the regular season with a 13-point effort, in which he grabbed 10 rebounds with two assists and one steal.

“Chris is our rebounder and inside guy,” Libby said.

“He got us some rebounds to get that fast break offense going.”

Freshman forward Tyler Kiel also had a solid evening as he notched 12 points, four rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal in the Flyers’ win.

“Tyler was actually sick the past couple of days and has been sick or injured most of the season,” Libby said. “He responded very well and we see him getting more confident in every game.”

The Flyers will play the winner of the Oakville vs. Mehlville game this Wednesday at Vianney and Libby knows that his squad will have its hands full with either team.

“They (Oakville and Mehlville) both have good shooters,” Libby said. “When you play against a good shooting team, you’ve got to find a way to stop that. From now on, you’re playing to win.”

The District No. 8 championship game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start this Friday at Vianney.
