10-year-old boasts national speedskating medals

Sunset Hills speedskater Beth Gier, 10, won gold and silver medals at the U.S. Short Track Speedskating National Championships. The event, which took place this winter in Cleveland, Ohio, featured top skaters from across the country. Gier is pictured skating with a substantial lead in a Pony Ladies 444 meter (51.94 seconds) semifinal event. She qualified for the finals, in which she finished first, winning gold in the event. She also skated a 222 meter (27.42 seconds), 333 meter (39.35 seconds) and 500 meter (59.35 seconds) during the semifinal with first-place finishes in each to qualify her for all the final events. She went on to finish second in the 333- and 500-meter finals. Gier skates with the Gateway Speedskating Club in Kirkwood.
